Introducing Connect Culture
Attending a school that has such a large array of students from different backgrounds, we have always heard and seen various groups throughout our school celebrating different holidays, speaking different languages, and partaking in different traditions throughout the year. Despite this, we always felt as though we didn’t know anything about the aspects of these cultures beyond the surface level and what we saw. This is what prompted us to start our project, Connect Culture. Connect Culture aims to increase awareness about other cultures and explore beyond just what we see. Not only that, but it also aims to connect people in our community back to their roots.
Living in Alpharetta, Georgia, we along with several of our peers are children of immigrants and have been disconnected with our origin cultures due to our distance from our extended family. When we go to visit these family members, we along with several of our friends feel a disconnect due to the fact that we don’t interact with our culture everyday.
Through Connect Culture, we gave students an outlet to explore aspects of their culture that they hadn’t thought about before. Getting to know and understand a culture isn’t just about seeing pictures and peering from the outside. Instead, it is about asking questions and being curious because although we all live in one world, it contains many stories.
